About Valentine, TX

Valentine is a small town of less than 100 residents (est.), located in Jeff Davis County, Texas. The story goes that a railroad crew, in 1882, had finished laying the tracks to the point where a water and fuel depot would be needed on February 14th. So they named the depot Valentine.

Valentine, to give you coordinates, is halfway between L.A. and New Orleans, almost exactly 1000 miles from each. Or, if you want something local, halfway between Marfa and Van Horn. Or halfway between Donald Judd & the Chinati Foundation, and Jeff Bezos and his outer space company Blue Origin. And halfway between both National Parks in Texas.

Deep in the Heart of West Texas. Small but mighty. Remote, yet close to everyone's heart.

About Valentine Mercantile General Store

Originally built in 1907 as Johnson's Grocery, the Old Mercantile Building in Valentine served as the community's general store for about 60 years selling food, dry goods, blacksmithing materials, etc.  It sat abandoned on the north side of the railroad tracks for about 50 years. A West Texas enthusiast purchased the property in 2012, because of the building's mystique, charm, and something about Valentine Tx. He hired local contractor Scott Williams of Alpine TX to renovate the property in 2015. Scott was somewhat of an adobe expert, both in the US and old Mexico. His deep knowledge of the area and love for old adobe buildings led to the site as it sits today.
